LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS

You may have come across the term "lab-grown diamond" as its popularity has surged in recent years. Perhaps you're curious: What exactly are lab-grown diamonds? Are they real diamonds? Should you choose lab-grown over natural diamonds?
Let's explore the world of lab-grown diamonds and find out if they're the right choice for you.
Contrary to moissanite, cubic zirconia (CZ), or other diamond stimulants, lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They will test positive on a diamond tester because of having the same chemical and optical properties as natural diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are produced in a controlled laboratory setting, without the detrimental environmental or social consequences of mining. The growth process mirrors that of mined diamonds. Initially, carbon atoms come together under intense heat and pressure, gradually bonding to form a crystalline lattice structure. Following this formation, they undergo cutting and polishing to enhance their brilliance. Just like mined diamonds, lab-created diamonds are available in various color, cut, clarity, and carat weight grades.
Choosing a lab-grown diamond allows you to appreciate the splendor of diamonds without the ecological and social impact of mining. Lab-grown diamonds offer an eco-friendly alternative to those sourced from traditional mining. Unlike naturally occurring diamonds, which take billions of years to form, lab-grown diamonds can be created more quickly and in greater quantities, ensuring accessibility with exceptional brilliance. Besides you can get a larger and better quality stone within your budget compared to natural diamonds. Moreover, lab-grown diamonds can be certified by reputable jewelry certification organizations just like natural.

HOW ARE LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS MADE?

Lab-grown diamonds are made by two methods: chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or high pressure, high temperature (HPHT).

The CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) method is a process used to produce lab-grown diamonds. In this method, a diamond seed crystal is placed in a vacuum chamber with a mixture of gases, typically methane and hydrogen. When energy is applied, such as through microwaves or lasers, the gases decompose, and carbon atoms are deposited onto the seed crystal, layer by layer, forming a diamond. This process allows for the controlled growth of high-quality diamonds with properties similar to natural ones.

LAB-GROWN DIAMOND FAQs

  • Yes, lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They share the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds. The difference lies in their origin: while natural diamonds are mined from the earth, lab-grown diamonds are created in laboratories. Moreover, they represent a transformative shift towards sustainability, offering environmentally conscious alternatives in an industry traditionally reliant on mined diamonds.
  • Lab-created diamonds exhibit identical thermal and electrical conductivity to mined diamonds. Therefore, they will pass a diamond tester examination.
  • Since a lab-grown diamond is identical in appearance to a natural diamond, distinguishing between the two is nearly impossible, even for most jewelers. The only reliable way to determine a diamond's origin is by sending it to a gemological laboratory, where a trained gemologist can examine the stone using specialized equipment.

  • Yes, lab-grown diamonds are just as strong as natural. Given their identical chemical composition, neither holds a superiority in strength. Both achieve score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale.
  • Lab-grown diamonds, like natural ones, are graded by independent gemological organizations based on the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Both types vary in color and quality, therefore, differences in brilliance and quality can occur with either. However, the controlled production of lab-grown diamonds often results in more consistent access to high-quality stones.
  • No, lab-grown diamonds do not discolor, fade, or cloud over time.
  • Yes, just like natural, lab-grown diamonds can be easily appraised and insured.
  • The choice ultimately depends on your personal preference. Both lab-grown and natural diamonds have their own unique qualities. Lab-grown diamonds are often more budget-friendly options for premium quality stones. In contrast, natural diamonds are rare, natural wonders and remain the traditional choice for many. Your decision will be guided by what matters most to you.
